Sítio da Janaguba (Janaguba Homestead) is a residence dedicated to promoting a healthier and more sustainable lifestyle. It is also one of the Demonstration Units of the Permaculture and Ecovillage Institute of Ceará – IPC. The site’s house was designed based on Bioclimatic Architecture and Natural Building principles, ensuring pleasant thermal and acoustic comfort with minimal environmental impact. The external area has been reforested, focusing on soil recovery, environmental restoration, and food production, including fruits, vegetables, staple crops (cassava, pumpkin, sweet potato, corn, etc.), unconventional edible plants (PANCS) such as ora-pro-nobis, bertalha, jaboti herb, joão gomes, and additional protein sources like eggs and fish. Furthermore, the site hosts courses and workshops aimed at spreading practical knowledge about sustainable living based on Permaculture principles.

History

In early 2009, during a community event at Sítio Floresta to create a garden made from old car tires, the idea of Sítio da Janaguba was born, upon learning that the land in front was for sale. This dream became reality in 2010 with the purchase of a 3,500-square-meter plot, the house’s construction in early 2011, and moving in, in June of the same year. The initial years were quite challenging, as the land was barren, with sandy soil and minimal nutrients, except for a few cashew, mango, coconut, and janaguba trees. Since then, much has changed. The site’s permaculture design was implemented, along with the construction of various structures such as compost bins, worm farms, a chicken-garden, a small pond, a herb spiral, a rainwater harvesting cistern, a seedling nursery, and a 700-square-meter Food Forest. Throughout this process, the site has hosted numerous events, courses, and workshops, promoting sustainable living, while adhering to Permaculture ethics and principles.
